Cashmere is a very delicate fabric, and should usually be dry cleaned, or if it can be hand washed, taken to a washing store. Washing it can actually make the fabric softer, further enhancing the feel of cashmere and the warmth. However, if you do not want to send your beautiful cashmere to a cleaner, you can wash it by yourself if you know the right way to do so. Cashmere, as I said before, is very delicate, and strong force should not be used as it might damage the fibres. Also, avoid sunlight and hanging it outside, since it will go out of shape.
Before you do anything, you must check the label on your cashmere to make sure it can be hand washed. Usually a knitted clothing can be washed while woven ones need to be dry cleaned. However, you should still check the label as it might be different for that clothing. Also, make sure that the detergent you are using is specially for cashmere or for a delicate fabric. If it isn't it will damage the fabric.
Method:
1.Add a little detergent to lukewarm water in the sink. The solution should be hand mixed before washing your clothing.
2.Place your clothing in the solution and move it around, also squishing the cashmere gently allowing the detergent to soak the fabric. Let the clothing sit in the solution for approximately fifteen minutes and massage it softly only if needed. Rubbing cause cashmere fibres to get damaged.
3.Empty the sink of the solution and fill with clean lukewarm water. Lightly massage the clean water through the fabric and get rid of the detergents and the residue. Keep on repeating this process until all the soap has been removed from the cashmere.
4.Lift the soap-free clothes out of the water and gently squeeze out the water, placing the cashmere on a dry towel (make sure you only squeeze and not wring. The fabric will get damaged if you give it too much force). Roll the clothing up with the towel and push on to it to get rid of more water. If needed, you can use a second towel.
5.Roll the clothing back to normal and place it in its normal state.
6.The cashmere should then be placed on a dry towel and air dried. Placing the towel and the clothing on a drying race will speed up the process. Cashmere should not be in direct sunlight!
There you go! Now you can go and wash your cashmere clothing on your own without having to pay someone else to do it. It is quite simple once you know what you have to do. By the way, you should make sure that it is actually dried before tiding it up. If it is still a bit wet, the next time you wear it, it will have a very unpleasant mouldy smell comparable to a wet dog. Cashmere clothing are now less expensive to care for now that you can wash it yourself.
